G'day Shredders,

Words have power. When articulated the right way words have the power to move entire nations.

The words we use in our daily lives also have power (much greater than some people may realize).

Words also allow us to make critical distinctions that can have a profound effect on how we conduct our lives (and physique transformation attempts!).

The Habit Mindset Vs. Diet Mindset is one of those critical distinctions that you must make in order to "live the fitness lifestyle" beyond your first shred mission.

I know this from personal experience, not making this distinction 7 years ago cost me 6 years of depression and misery.

P.S. Did you notice that the Shredder Council now resides permanently on the right-hand nav bar of this blog! Much more to come! The RTP Blog Shredders currently without blogs will have a surprise coming their way soon...

RTP Group Shred Video: Day 9
"Habit" Mindset Vs. "Diet" Mindset

Inside this video you will discover...

  1. "Diet" Mindset: Why this mindset was a major factor in my downward spiral.
  2. "Habit" Mindset: Why this mindset is at the core of my current journey.
  3. Shredder Council: How you guys have already ingrained a powerful "habit" mindset.

Adam, great video. You look HUGE in your photos. Plus on your IDs, you look so different. Only five days left. Holy smokes!

I cannot believe the words "Certified Shredder" appear near my name. Why does that make me so ridiculously happy!

Hi Adam,
Loved the video and now I know what has been my lifelong problem. Always on diet mode. Will keep up from now on as a Certified (by darn!) Shredder and try and make a habit of this new lifestyle begun right here.
A big High-Five!!!

Just popped in to say I blogged about diet mind set, and I really dig the way your videos get me to thinking. It's fun.

And, I just re-read my earlier entry. I want to clarify that I meant HUGE as in your muscles are getting really HUGE in your Mission photos.

Hi five right back at you Lynda.

I totally agree. I never like the word "diet", it carries a lot of bad connotations and implies something only temporary. I prefer to think of what I'm (we're) doing as a lifestyle change, changing your daily habits. Eating healthy and getting regular exercise is only going to make your life better and longer, so you may as well do it as long as you can!

The calorie deficit is still necessary to lose fat, but I don't think of myself as being on a diet. I'm simply manipulating my nutritional intake for the better!

Hi Adam! Wow, thanks for the certified shredder tag mate!

Anyways on to the diet/lifestyle mindset. Years ago when I lost 20kg the word diet never crept into my mind. Rather, I just told people it's the way I eat and the way I lived. I guess in society now with all the 12 weeks program and such really put the diet mindset into my head and that's where I started to fail, consistently.

So if you want to succeed, make this a lifestyle, not a diet.

You know, hearing about your past experiences always motivates me. I look at your pictures from November 2006 and think to myself that I look alot like that now. I only hope that I can look as good as you do one year from now!

Ei, Adam,

At first, when I decided and tried to start shredding fats, the "diet" mindset was instilled to my thoughts. It was hard at first until it was through the "progressive discipline" that you have mentioned that it eventually became my "habit": to choose the right foods and right portions to eat every time I go to our canteen or shop for my groceries; and stick to the daily plans of going to the preplanned workout routine for the week.
The decision-making (on what seemed to be a burden before) of choosing what to eat and not,and to do preplanned work outs have become part of my system that I haven't mind of it for the succeeding days until today. It eventually turned into a lifestyle.
Whenever there are instances of eating junk foods, I just always tell myself: "Think of all the sweats and sacrifices that you have made and gone through, are you willing to regress and go over it again and became rotten?" That question really never let me down whenever I am discouraged or go the other way around my set goals.

BTW, thanks for tagging me as "certified shredder". Great job, Adam.

Hi Christy,

Haha, I though you meant the "good huge" the first time! I'm glad you like the CS tag, because you are!

That's the spirit Lynda! BTW, you are radiating in your recent pics.

Right on Raiden, the word diet also contains "die" so it can't be to empowering.

Adam

Very well said Alex, another aspect is preparing your meals in advance as well as pre-planning your next workout.

That's a great concept in the video. I, too, hate the word diet - and you get such a different reaction to people when you say you are on a "diet" so I just stopped using it, but I didn't really have a good word to replace it. And habit is definately a good one. I have also said in the past, for instance if someone says, do you want a piece of cake, I say, "no, I choose not to eat junk food", instead of something like "I can't becuase I'm on a diet" or, worse "I'm not allowed". I think that implies that the "diet" and the food you eat are in control of you, not the other way around, so saying you choose or do not choose puts you back in the driver's seat. I like that, and it ties right in with what you were saying about a habit because once something becomes a habit, you don't have to think about doing it each time, always making a new decision. The decision is already made, you are just carrying out the action that goes along with it. Thanks again for sharing all that you have learned with us and putting it all so clearly at just the right times!

Hey Adam,

Great video. I agree with everyone that diet is not a good word or indeed a good habit. You need to ensure that any "habit" you pick-up is a good one as habits can be very powerful.

I strongly believe that when I smoked it was a habit rather than an addiction and it is the habit that is actually harder to beat than the addiction that you have. So if you can get the correct mindset it actually becomes much easier than you expect.

I prefer to refer to my food as my nutrition rather than my diet, as it is always changing. I diet tends to convey a certain sype of eating or foods that you are eating and generally cannot be maintained for long periods of time.

Take care,

Andrew
